A mother duck led her flock of ducklings across 13th Avenue in front of Willamette Hall Wednesday evening. Onlookers expressed concern for their well being as the nearest body of water is across busy Franklin Boulevard. University students observed the Hindu religious holiday of Holi in colorful style on Thursday evening, with the crowd nearing a thousand people. Holi is a springtime Hindu religious celebration observed primarily in India where people throw colored water and powder at each other, and was put on by the UO Students of the Indian Subcontinent (SIS).

UO theater department’s production of “Salmon Is Everything”

Tuesday evening I had the opportunity to photograph a dress rehearsal for the upcoming community-based play “Salmon Is Everything.” The play portrays the conflict in a Southern Oregon community between Native Americans and farmers when low water levels caused by dams and irrigation result in a massive fish kill on the Klamath River. The play, directed by Theresa May, is being put on at Robinson Theater on the University of Oregon campus May 20-June 4.

I had the pleasure of exploring Oregon’s Zebrafish International Resource Center this afternoon. It houses mutant strains of zebra fish, and breeds and distributes them to researchers worldwide. The room is maintained at a humid 83.3 degrees Fahrenheit, optimal breeding conditions for the fish.
