Oregon women’s basketball suffers 14th consecutive Civil War loss
It took overtime, but the Civil War losing streak was pushed to 14 games for Oregon women’s basketball in its 85-79 loss to the Oregon State Beavers on Friday night at Gill Coliseum.
With Oregon down four points with 40.7 seconds left in overtime, Sabrina Ionescu was fouled on a missed 3-point shot, but after knocking down the first two she missed the third to keep the Oregon deficit at two. On the next play, Oregon State’s Katy McWilliams was fouled on a made 3-pointer and hit the free throw for the four-point play with 11.4 seconds left to push the lead to six for the final margin.
With 11 seconds left in regulation and the Ducks down three, Hebard appeared to be called for an offensive foul which would have nearly sealed their fate. However, after official review the call was reversed and Hebard was awarded two free throws. She missed the second to keep the Beavers lead at two. After Kat Tudor made one-of-two at the other end, Ionescu hit a long 3-pointer to tie the game with six seconds left. Ionescu finished the game with a career-high 35 points and six assists.
The Beavers entered the game as the No. 1 3-point shooting team in the nation and early on, they lived up to it. Led by Tudor’s 3-for-3 effort in the first quarter, the Beavers knocked down all seven attempted 3-point shots in a 28-point first quarter effort. Tudor finished with a career-high 34 points.
Oregon State’s Marie Gulich tied her career high with 28 points and 15 rebounds and five assists.
Oregon State held a 42-36 halftime lead. Its shots weren’t falling as much in the second half, as they made just 3-of-11 from beyond the 3-point line, which helped the Ducks slowly get back into the game.
Before the game, the Ducks announced that Lexi Bando would be out indefinitely and miss this weekend’s games against Oregon State. Mallory McGwire, who started the first 10 games of the season before being benched in favor of Sabally, filled the void in the starting lineup. After a scoreless first half, McGwire finished the game with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Round two of the Civil War will move to Matthew Knight Arena on Sunday at 5 p.m.
