No. 38 Oregon prepares for Cal, Stanford

With a weekend of top-ranked teams ahead, Ducks women’s tennis is preparing for a tough pair of matches on the road.

0-3 in it’s last three matches, Oregon is in search of a confidence booster. A win over Cal or No. 18 Stanford would be enough to boost the Ducks to the top 20 rank they need to make it atop of the Pac-12.

If No. 38 Oregon can take down these California schools, it won’t only mean a jump in the ranks, but also completing a goal two Ducks have had since the season began.

Back in January with Pac-12 play still on the horizon, sophomore Nia Rose said her aim for the season was to “beat one of the [California] schools. They’re always at least… ranked within the top ten, so that’s a goal.”

Rose’s partner Alyssa Tobita has her eyes set on a doubles victory over Stanford. In last year’s doubles match, they were “right on the verge of beating them.” Rose and Tobita were forced to abandon a close match against the No. 2 team of Carol Zhao and Taylor Davidson game when Stanford took wins on courts No. 1 and No. 3.

This year, only Davidson of that pair remains in the doubles ITA rankings. With a new partner, the pair is currently No. 4.

Tobita and Rose are holding their own weight, going 11-4 overall in doubles and 9-3 in dual this season.

Besides Stanford, Oregon will have to brave the beast that is the Cal women’s tennis team. Besides being the No. 1 rank, Cal also boasts five of the top 125 singles players in the nation and the No. 6 doubles team.

For wins this weekend, Oregon needs to open the match with doubles points to gain momentum for the rest of the match. The Ducks’ best shots at those doubles points are the duo of Rose and Tobita and the team of Shweta Sangwan and Kennan Johnson.

Play against Cal begins Friday at 1:30 p.m., followed by a noon match on Saturday against Stanford.
