Mother of Lauren Jones files $2.5 million lawsuit against PeaceHealth

The mother of the Oregon acrobatics and tumbling athlete Lauren Jones ,who passed away due to meningococcemia last year, filed a $2.5 million lawsuit against PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center University District on Monday, the Register-guard reported.

The lawsuit claims medical negligence and wrongful death of Jones. She was one out of six confirmed cases of meningococcemia but the only one who died during last year’s outbreak.

On Feb. 17, Jones was diagnosed at the University District hospital with an “influenza like illness” when she was brought to the hospital with a 103 degree fever,  according to the lawsuit. She was given Tylenol and ibuprofen before being sent back to her residence hall, where she never regained consciousness and died.

The lawsuit also alleged that the hospital failed to perform a blood test on Jones and have her evaluated by a specialist for infectious disease while meningococcemia was afflicting at the time.

PeaceHealth did not respond to media request at the moment.

The story is developing. More to come.
