Oregon goes 4-2 at Louisville Slugger Classic last weekend
The Oregon women’s softball team had a strong showing at the Louisville Slugger Classic in Las Vegas this weekend. Oregon picked up four wins during the course of the four-day tournament, improving its overall record to 8-4 on the year.
The Ducks were shut out by the BYU Cougars to open the tournament on Thursday afternoon. Oregon sophomore Samantha Skillingstad held BYU in check through the first five innings before giving up five runs (three earned) all in the fifth.
The Ducks bounced back to pick up two wins over Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State on Friday. Freshman Jessica Moore threw a complete game one-hitter for Oregon in the first game, while senior Blair Williamson hit her first home run of the season in the 6-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton.
“Jessica Moore was really solid,” Oregon head coach Mike White said. “But there’s still a few things we need to tighten up with the infield.”
Oregon got more strong pitching from junior left-hander Brittany Rumfelt who tallied her third win of the season in the Ducks’ 9-1 demolishing of Long Beach State later that afternoon. Rumfelt also homered in the game to complement freshman Samantha Pappas’ 3-for-4, three-RBI day at the plate.
The Ducks dropped their only game on Saturday, a 5-4 loss to Indiana, before finishing strong on Sunday afternoon. Oregon beat out Illinois-Chicago University in a suspenseful nine-inning win, featuring a two-out double in the ninth by junior Monique Fuiava that drove in freshman Allie Burger to win the game. Moore pitched nine innings in relief in the win, striking out nine and giving up just one walk.
