Supwitchugirl says UO Athletics axed Nike deal

The three University students who comprise comedy rap group Supwitchugirl might have been smelling roses when their video, “I Love My Ducks,” blossomed into an overnight success, but now all they can smell is trouble.

The beef between the trio and the University athletic department continued unabated yesterday when Supwitchugirl wrote on its Facebook page that the athletic department nixed an offer from Nike to edit out the copyrighted Duck mascot and play the video on the Jumbotron during the upcoming Civil War football game.

The group urged its fans to e-mail Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing Angie Sit, who they said was behind the decision.

However, Executive Assistant Athletic Director Dave Williford contested the group’s claim.

“The only thing I can tell you is that the kids haven’t contacted Mike Bellotti or anyone in the University administration,” Williford said. “The athletic department’s stance remains consistent as it ever was.”

“The kids have, I think, grossly and unfairly chastised Angie Sit for someone who is just doing her job,” Williford continued. “And I think the tactics employed border on harassment. The department has not been presented this request, and then (Supwitchugirl) go on Facebook with hearsay. They’re trying to strong-arm a decision.”
In the meantime, the controversy is only making the video more popular, Supwitchugirl member Michael Bishop said.

“I mean, it’s like the UO is shooting itself in the foot,” Bishop said. “We got e-mails from high school kids who watch it in between classes and sing it.”

Controversy aside, Bishop said he still thinks showing the video at the game would be unbelievable.

“That’s a dream,” he said. “Sixty thousand people singing the song. I don’t think there’s anything like that to motivate a team.”

Perhaps Chip could draw up a "ladder" leading to the possible reinstatement of the video in some form!!!

What if a group of nerdy college kids wrote some catchy rhymes about the football team, used their superior technological know-how to make it into a music video for a class project, coaxed a student with access to the mascot costume to bring it for the shoot with a promise that it wouldn't be public , caught lightning in a bottle and then let their heads swell to the size of Autzen Stadium? Supwitchudorks? Can't wait until Michael Eisner and Co. go to work on your wallets.

I think just chanting "wait'll you see my O" would be spectacular. I think it would be tacky to play the video at the game, but I do love watching it. And I don't know these guys from adam---I am an alum from 1991 (that makes me forty these days!) and I think the spirit it brings is a lot of fun. HOWEVER, to play it before we have gotten a Rose Bowl berth is downright audacious.

My alma mater continues to be a guiding light of how not to handle PR.

Also, while I hope no one is harassing Ms. Sit, I think it's totally yellow to make a statement and then hide from further questions. It appears that there is some problem and/or confusion about who is ultimately responsible for making this decision, and Ms. Sit is merely the mouthpiece that others are hiding behind.

As for Supwitchugirl, they shouldn't expect any concession from the UO after their improper and audacious unauthorized use of the mascot.

If you took out the Duck mascot and the roses lyrics, how much excitement would this render? I can't imagine this video being nearly as popular if it had these two key components stricken from the video. Why bother making a large ordeal to push for getting it played under the conditions that a bunch of adjustments are made? You simply diminish its value and thus appeal when making critical edits. Thus, if there is no okay by the university to use the video in its current format, I say let the push to further show it on the jumbotron go and simply enjoy it for what it is right now.

You cannot play this at the stadium. I want to make it first clear that I am a die hard fan and very much enjoy watching the "I Love My Ducks" video. I have played it well over a dozen times. However us true die hard duck fans need to step back a minute take a breath and remove ourselves from the incredible hype surrounding our program and added influences like this video. The "roses" lyrics simply cannot be incorporated into gameday due to the fact that we HAVE NOT solidified a spot in the rose bowl. Not to mention this will be a nationally televised game and to further expose this video to mass media would send a message to not only everyone and anyone, but most importantly Disney. That message being, we as the University support the video and its contents. Well being that the contents involve a copyright Duck that wasn't authorized to be used in the first place, this wouldn't mull over well with our relationship at Disney. To at any point jeopardize our schools mascot under any circumstances is not something the University is going to attempt and I applaud them for their stand, despite its lackluster popularity.

The athletic department has ALWAYS tried to 'strong arm' the little guys...athletic ticket prices, parking at autzen (unless you one of the 'chosen few' your bussed in and out like cattle going to slaughter), proprietary audio and video telecasts of their games (can't get ANYTHING back here in Maine), etc. Thing is, this song/video are bigger than they are...it's taken on a life of it's own...once it hit YouTube there was NOTHING they could do about it...

If there is one thing the Football Gods love, it's irony. (see Arizona fans pouring over the stands onto the field before the game was over).

For the LOVE- do NOT play anything that says "i smell roses" before we win the damn game!

This "band" must have a lot of friends that like to comment on this story, because there is NO WAY that anybody except their friends actually like this song. It is worse than anything Toby Keith has put out and worse than Celine Dion doing a cover of AC/DC (yes, that video is out there, but I warn viewers not to search for it or else their ears might explode). In any event, the song is awful. Just truly awful. I'm embarrassed that it has gotten this much attention as it is.

From comments I've read, Williford seems the least trustworthy of the bunch. He must have a backgound in political science or law. He is a much worse image for the university than any of the perceived threats he claims to be trying to thwart. Just from his quotes, I can't stand the guy.

56,000 fans singing "I Love My Ducks" WITHOUT the "I smell roses" intro, led by the band, would not be a jinx and would absolutely rock the house. It also wouldn't be a copyright issue for anyone, and would require no editing.

I say play the video but after it has been edited. You can edit out the I Smell Roses part and also edit out the Duck Mascot with game action. Then, al lyou have is a song called, I love my Ducks with fans and game action. Perfectly fine to be shown on the big screen. If you include the Roses bit, then YES, DO NOT SHOE until AFTER the game is completed and Oregon has won.

"...dont play it until either the game is in hand or until right after the final seconds tick off the jumbotron (now bigger than osu's)."

TOTALLY AGREE. If the game is clearly a win, play the video as an early victory celebration with a few minutes left in the game -- say with around 4:20 on the clock.

I, for one, love the video, but don't want it played on the jumbotron. Love the youthful enthusiasm and healthy disrespect for authority, but DON'T JINX IT!. Those of us who couldn't believe the Rose Bowl was happening for us in 1994 don't want to see it messed up.

If it is allowed at all, it MUST be after the game.

everyone is missing the most important point here:

The song is terrible and the video is worse.

I think this is all about business and law, not about how nice an artistic piece the song and video may be. And they are very good. But I believe that copyright and contract law need to be respected. The UofO is a class organization, not some group of rebels from the north woods doing whatever feels good.

If I were Disney Co, I would be nervous about the UofO's use of the Puddles image. I know, it is a great story about Walt Disney (himself) sending the sketches to AD Leo Harris, and worth retelling. But in those days the UO played Portland State and Idaho. Now the UO is becoming a CONTENDER, beating schools like Michigan, Texas, and Oklahoma State, and getting a lot of time on ESPN (which is a Disney subsidiary.) So the use of the Puddles image is no longer a backwater deal, it is a nationwide thing with lots of eyeballs looking at a mascot bearing (ahem) a lot of resemblance to another Disney image.

Recently there have been some incidents that did not reflect favorably on Puddles' image. Was it the Houston game where Puddles was in a fight with the other mascot, resulting in a PAC-10 ejection? Then Puddles appeared in the broadcast booth during the suspended game and had to be chased down by the UO Athletic Director! More recently UO overall was in the doghouse over the Boise State incident. Now we have an unauthorized use of the Puddles image in a bootleg video that is going global. The UO shoud be very careful here or Disney will pull use of the Puddles image entirely. Then what will we do? Go back to that lame "SuperDuck" mascot that was trotted out to do pushups about ten years ago? I hope not. I am willing to go along with whatever it takes to keep in compliance with the Disney contract and thereby keep Puddles going for another 60 years.

Please do not play this song until after Oregon wins the game...if you play it before it will backfire and just fire up the osu players. It's a cool song and the guys are talented but dont play it until either the game is in hand or until right after the final seconds tick off the jumbotron (now bigger than osu's).

My advice to the guys: re-edit the song without the official duck mascot and then do whatever you want with it...market it, sell the rights, do whatever and not have to worry about the school or copywrights.

Maybe I'm superstitious, but playing a song about smelling roses and going to the Rose Bowl in front of 60K fans BEFORE they actually win and go to the Rose Bowl, sounds like a bad idea to me. Play it afterwards, sure, but before a win? No way. That would be like the Arizona fans jumping the railing getting ready to storm the field while Masoli has the ball down by 7. Bad idea.

When is someone (Hello Mike Bellotti) going to pull their head out re: this video. Look at the YouTube comments, listen to feedback in the media......the fans LOVE this thing. It could be bigger and better for the Ducks if they wanted. It is clear that Dave Wiliford wants to be "boss" here. If they would have handled this different from the beginning they could have cashed in here.....Grow up Dave....you have a seat at the adult table.....help the kids (and the rest of us) have some fun.

OK Mr. Williford... who is attempting to strong arm who? The heck? With all of the legal jargon you used in your response to this matter, you just gave the writers for Boston Legal a whole season worth of script material. Trying to threaten but not really, seems as though your bluffing or that you really don't have a legal leg to stand on.

Plan A: If it was such a huge infringement on U of O / Disney Duck policy and I was in your shoes... I would personally be on the phone promptly with Disney to get it approved. I get that it's after the fact but, being that Disney is the "happiest place on earth" I am fairly certain they would not have a problem with this video.

Plan B: If it was not OK with Mickey... I would call the kids personally and call Nike personally and get this video to the edit room. Not to mention a fair amount of footage was taken at the U.S.C. game day event and the Duck was approved to be there, so it seems to me.... those shots would not have to be edited out!
That would probably be a great compromise now, wouldn't it?

Mr. Williford, looks to me like the University has an opportunity to support their students that had a great idea that has garnered some national publicity for not only the University but also for our Ducks!

Or... you could always go the negative publicity route. Oh wait, you already are!
