Health center receives 200 doses of H1N1 vaccine

On Monday afternoon, the University Health Center received another shipment of the H1N1 vaccine from the Lane County Public Health Department.

The allotment included 200 doses on the inactivated injectable vaccine and comes at a time when University Health Center Director Mike Eyster believes the illness to be declining on campus.

“The cases haven’t stopped coming in,” Eyster said. “But they are coming in at a decreasing rate for sure.”

Two weeks ago, the health center received a shipment of H1N1 vaccine that was gone just as quickly as it arrived.

“I think people know that it is important to get (the vaccine),” Eyster said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention calculated that from Oct. 18 to Oct. 24, 22 flu-related deaths were reported. Of those deaths, 19 were associated with the 2009 H1N1 virus, finding that the influenza activity in the U.S. has increased.

The Lane County Public Health Department has scheduled two upcoming H1N1 community clinics based on vaccine availability. They will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Wheeler
Pavilion at the Lane County Fairgrounds on Nov. 7 and 14.
