Mass Media and Society students use new technology to watch and comment worldwide on second presidential debate

The second presidential debate of 2008 filled Columbia 150 Tuesday night with 270 freshmen journalism students holding iClickers and muttering to each other about how they thought the candidates did. The event, "Rate the Debate 2008," was coordinated by Mass Media and Society professors Tiffany Gallicano, Harsha Gangadharbatla and Michael Werner.

During Tuesday afternoon's National Coming Out Week celebration in the EMU amphitheater, the LGBTQA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Alliance) and the LGBT education support services program (ESSP) watched in horror as the colorful arch of more than 300 balloons suddenly came loose and floated up into the sky.

When University junior Paul Kozik returned from class Monday afternoon, he discovered the screen outside his bedroom window was slashed and his wallet, cell phone and MP3 player were gone. And it all happened in broad daylight. The thief almost made away with his Nintendo Wii, but abandoned it in a tangled mess on his bed.

Bailout bill gives Lane County $49.6 million

Lane County got a break Friday when the federal bailout bill was passed, infusing $49.6 million dollars back into the budget. A little more than $15 million of that will go into the general fund, which pays for county programs and public safety. With such a small amount, the county's Financial Planning Manager, David Garnick, expects the money to go fast.
