Former volunteer assistant hired for the Ducks' distance corps
by Andrew Greif | Sports Editor |
Maurica Powell has been hired as an assistant coach for the Ducks' cross country and track and field program to work with distance runners.
Powell joins husband Andy Powell and Director of Track and Field Vin Lananna as coaches responsible for the Oregon distance program.
Powell had been a volunteer assistant for the Ducks for the past three years, working with the women's distance runners and recruiting for the women's program, roles she will still hold.
"We are thrilled to hire Maurica," said associate head coach Dan Steele in a media release. "She has proven that she is one of the top distance coaches in the country. Her hiring will enable us to continue the excellence in our cross country teams, while simultaneously building a nationally competitive and well-rounded track and field program."
Last season, Powell helped coach Nicole Blood to All-America awards in both cross country and track (5,000 meters). Zoe Buckman in the 800 meters was another Oregon track All-American, while Alex Kosinski was an All-American in cross country as well as the Pac-10 newcomer of the year.
Powell has coached Rebekah Noble to four all-American honors, as well as leading Keara Sammons and Nicole Blood to all-American honors.
