Tonight the Department of Music and Dance proudly presents an evening of performances by the UO Concert Choir and the UO Repertoire Singers in Beall Hall. The choirs will be performing contemporary pieces from all around the world in the culminating event of an entire term of practice and preparation.

Choir Concert

WHAT:A performance by the UO Concert Choir and UO Repertoire Singers
WHEN:Today, 8 p.m.
WHERE:Beall Hall
COST:$7 general admission, $5 students

"I like to expose concert choir and our audiences to a wide variety of style periods and genres so that they may experience a large scope of music," said Concert Choir director Alison Mann. The Concert Choir will tour the world with stops in England for a British anthem by Martin Shaw, a trip to Ireland with the Gaelic lullaby "The Gartan Mother's Lullaby," and an adventure down under with the aboriginal-inspired piece "Tungarre." The set concludes with a rousing rendition of the gospel piece "Rejoice!" by Jeffery Ames, which will be led by soprano Ailin Darling and tenor David Frank. The choir will also be accompanied by Dr. Hung-Yin Chu playing the organ for the Martin Shaw selection, and "The Gartan Mother's Lullaby" will feature grad student Amy Kerker on the flute.

"This is my last concert at the University of Oregon and this program is a collection of pieces that I really enjoy," Mann said. "I think that the spirit of the pieces and the choir will provide a wonderful concert experience on Thursday."

Mann, who has conducted the choir for more than a year, just completed her doctorate in music education and choral conducting and will be the assistant professor of choral music education at Kennesaw State University in the fall. She leaves behind a concert choir that is all-inclusive and allows all University students to participate. The choir is non-auditioned and provides an outlet for students to sing who might have sung in high school or those who want to experience choir for the first time. It represents a diverse population of students from various majors and disciplines across campus.

The UO Repertoire Singers will be accompanied by the University of Oregon Campus Orchestra and will also provide selections that will take its audience all around the globe. Led by grad student Emily Isaacson, the Repertoire Singers will feature songs from Israel, Kenya and Italy, as well as selections by James MacMillan and Arvo Pärt. The Repertoire Singers is the newest addition to the University of Oregon's choral program. It is a select 18- to 30-voice ensemble drawn from auditions held during Week of Welcome.

The show will start tonight at 8 p.m., in Beall Hall with tickets available at the door for $7 general admission and $5 for students and senior citizens.
