University President Dave Frohnmayer announced this morning that he will retire at the end of the 2008-09 school year.

Frohnmayer made his announcement in a letter to Oregon University System Chancellor George Pernsteiner and Gov. Ted Kulongoski.

Pernsteiner said a search for the next president will begin immediately with the intent that one will be selected before Frohnmayer formally hangs up his hat in the summer of 2009.

Frohnmayer has been the University's president since 1994. Before that he was the dean of the law school, a University professor and Oregon's Attorney General.

"Dave Frohnmayer is not only a great leader, he is a great Oregonian," Kulongoski said in a press release. "Dave has served the citizens of the state in a variety of capacities throughout his long and illustrious career, and as president of the UO has helped pave a financial path to expand educational opportunities for more Oregonians."

Check back this evening or in tomorrow's paper to see a complete story, including an exclusive interview with Frohnmayer.
