Civil War series going on today, Saturday at OSU
In brief
by Jeffrey Dransfeldt | Senior Sports Reporter
The Oregon softball team is heading to Corvallis this week for a two-game series with Oregon State.
Oregon plays the first game against the Beavers today at 4 p.m. at the OSU Softball Complex. The Ducks then return to Corvallis on Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest.
The Ducks (28-19) are riding a two-game winning streak, courtesy of a sweep of host Portland State on Wednesday, and are looking to dig their way out of last place in the Pacific-10 Conference.
"It's definitely going to be an opportunity to take out some aggression that's been building up," catcher Ashley Kivett said.
In the team's first meeting, Oregon State emerged from its visit to Eugene with a 7-4 win. The Beavers led much of the game until a late offensive flourish by Oregon brought the Ducks within an at-bat of tying the game.
Pinch hitter Blair Williamson opened the inning with a single. Catcher Ashley Kivett slugged a two-run homer over the right field wall. Three batters later, center fielder Neena Bryant brought in the fourth run with an RBI double off the top of the center field wall.
Bryant advanced to third on a single by Lovena Chaput, placing two runners on base with two outs and the potential tying run at-bat in third baseman Joanna Gail, but Gail struck out to end the game.
Oregon State (25-21, 3-6 Pac-10) sits sixth place in the conference, two spots ahead of Oregon, after losing to Stanford, 10-1, in six innings last weekend on its Bay Area trip and beating California, 8-0, in six innings before losing to Cal, 3-0.
Oregon is looking to pick up a pair of wins before heading south for the Arizona road trip next weekend.
"I think we can compete with anybody in the Pac-10," Kivett said. "It's just a matter of who shows up ready to win that day."
