Sustainable design principles will be topic of HOPES conference held this weekend

The 14th annual Holistic Options for Planet Earth Sustainability conference will take place this weekend at Lawrence Hall.
Put on by the student Ecological Design Center, HOPES is designed to "promote the deeper understanding and broader application of sustainable design principles." The EDC also focuses on sustainable practices, both in architecture and in the community.
The conference will include nationally recognized keynote speakers, hands-on workshops, a green business expo and environmental art, among other things.
Also this week, in conjunction with HOPES and the 10th annual Earth Day Celebration, the student organization Environmental Policymakers and Planners is hosting the John H. Baldwin Film and Lecture Series. The films will be shown over the next three nights, and the lectures all take place Saturday.
The first two feature-length environmental films will be shown tonight and tomorrow at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, in room 115 of Lawrence Hall. The Saturday series will feature a number of films and lectures dealing with both regional and worldwide environmental issues. A few of the lectures deal with steps individuals can take to curb their environmental impact.
"I think our hope with this film festival is to ... do what John Baldwin did, which is to inspire people in their community to become catalysts for change," said EPP President Aaron Derwingson, who helped organize the festival. "It helps link what we do here on campus to what happens out in the broader Eugene community."
The Saturday event will take place at Eugene Water and Electric Board's Rivers Edge Plaza. It begins at 11 a.m. and is scheduled to conclude at 5 p.m.
