Mind of a genius

Physics professor Raghuveer Parthasarathy's lifelong love of science has led to career success

He's a doctor of physics and a recipient of the National Science Foundation's prestigious CAREER award, so University professor Raghuveer "Raghu" Parthasarathy knows a thing or two about single-celled organisms. He said if he were to be one, he'd be tuberculosis.

"It's very hard to kill it," Parthasarathy said. "And it's very popular."

With his research team of seven University students - four graduates and three undergraduates - Parthasarathy has built artificial material using biological molecules that mimic the structures of the tuberculosis molecule membranes. Unlike other molecules, tuberculosis molecules don't die when they're dehydrated and Parthasarathy is curious as to why that is.

Rec center fee increase proposal anticipated

Despite having what some board members describe as inadequate information to make a decision, the Student Recreation Center Advisory Board may decide as soon as tonight on a suggested increase in student fees for 2008-09 to support the indebted rec center.

Eugene city councilors met Monday night amidst the muffled grumblings from South University area residents to discuss the plans of a seven-story, 52-unit apartment building that may be built just one block south of the University.

Retired English professor Louise Westling will discuss the concept of ecofeminism in a presentation this evening at the Many Nations Longhouse. Ecofeminism holds that women and children are more affected by the environment than men, said Amy Hughes Giard of the First Year Programs department.
