The ASUO Women's Center will kick off its week-long celebration leading up to International Women's Day (Mar. 8) with a screening of the documentary film "Bride Kidnapping Tradition in Kyrgyzstan" at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the EMU Mills International Center.

After the screening, event coordinator Aida Jolosheva will initiate a discussion with audience members about the film and women's rights in general.

The film gives an inside perspective of the ancient tradition of bride kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan. Though outlawed in 1994, the practice is still common. The documentary features actual footage of bride kidnappings and explores the cultural reasons for the tradition.

Jolosheva, who was born in Kyrgyzstan, chose to show this film in order to share a piece of her own culture with the University students.

"I want to share this with the UO community, to let them know that these things exist in the world. The reason for celebrating International Women's Day is to bring attention to women's struggles around the world. This movie shows one part of this," Jolosheva said.

After the film, Jolosheva said, she hopes to generate a lively group discussion of women's rights in developing countries.

The Women's Center will conclude its Women's Day celebration by hosting a night of international dance and music on Mar. 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Mills International Center.
