Landlords elicit a sinking feelingIn my opinion | A clever ruseby Kamran RouzpayA lot of people I know bitch that Eugene is a small, boring, time-warped, counter-culture college town with no metropolitan aspirations. And I think that is totally fine, because what Eugene lacks in grand skyscrapers, massive weekend guides in the Eugene Weekly and a bloated sense of what culture should be, it excels in having one of the friendliest communities I have ever experienced. |

College preparation should be top priorityEditorialby Emerald Editorial BoardOregon is struggling to prepare its high school students for college, and those students are paying the price. A report from Achieve, Inc., a national education advocacy organization, shows that Oregon has largely failed thus far to adequately align its high school education policies in such a way as to send students to college prepared for the increased responsibility that lies ahead. |

In conservation battle, every little bit helpsGuest commentaryby Guest CommentaryIn the opinion column by Joe Vandehey ("One recycling contest does not a better planet make," ODE Feb. 21), several misconceptions were raised. My purpose in writing is to address these. I would like to begin by congratulating Mr. Vandehey for his strong recycling ethic and personal goal of waste reduction. |

'09 Legislature must face tort cap issueGuest commentaryby Guest CommentaryThe Oregon Legislature should have tackled the issue of tort cap liability during its recently concluded special session. The state tort cap should have been - along with the situation at Oregon State Hospital - a "don't go home without it" issue. Unfortunately, it's easy to think of the tort cap issue as "an OHSU problem" and of OHSU as being "a Portland issue. |

Student government has become childish and unprofessionalLetter to the editorI for one am tired of how childish and partisan issues have become on this campus. An argument that originally had to do with the VFSA's budget expanded into personal attacks and childish bickering. Most recently in the Feb. 28 issue of the Emerald, Kaila Carty wrote how "appalled" she was to hear Senator Diego Hernandez call out PFC Chairman Jacob Brennan (who just happens to be her boyfriend) for making sexist, racist and oppressive comments during meetings. |
|
Chairman Brennan did not deserve comments made about himLetter to the editorAfter resigning from the student senate a few weeks ago some very skewed comments have been made regarding myself and Programs Finance Committee chair Jacob Brennan. I could care less what's been said about me, but am quite angry about the comments directed toward Brennan. |

Obama can talk the talk, but Hillary will walk the walkLetter to the editorBarack Obama has presented himself as a unique political figure who says what he means and does what he says. In the Ohio debate, we saw a glimpse of the real Obama; the Obama who became chair of a national security subcommittee, put it on his resume, but did not hold a single oversight hearing because he was too busy running for president; the Obama who spends his time talking about change you can believe in instead of change you actually can count on. |

Ethnic studies' struggle reflects uncooperation of administrationLetter to the editorThe fight for ethnic studies existing within our educational institution is one that has persisted because of uncooperative administrators across the country for several decades. Although the struggle to establish and maintain ethnic studies in universities has been arduous, there have been successes in instituting departments all across the nation, across universities throughout the west coast, but not at the University of Oregon. |
