Nickels and dimes don't add up to real change

In my opinion | A clever ruse

by Kamran Rouzpay

Causes are important. Any cause. Pick one, stay devoted, and few could ever argue that you didn't care about something. Want to save the rain forest? Good for you! Get out there and picket away. Hate the president? Join the club and contribute to his never-ending downward spiral.

Lane police need a rescue

Editorial

by Emerald Editorial Board

The criminal justice system in Lane County is in dire need of help. As the Emerald reported earlier this week ("Report card reveals Lane County justice system stretched thin," ODE, Jan. 24), Lane County is one of the worst in the nation when it comes to how many police officers there are per capita.

Untrustworthy OSPIRG needs greater transparency

Guest commentary

by Guest Commentary

Thank you for the in-depth coverage on OSPIRG. The group has a long and noted history of misusing student funds and dishonest political tactics. For 31 years, OSPIRG has monopolized the "public's interest" and played games on and off campus in order to further its agenda.

OSPIRG's recent victory a prime example of service

Guest commentary

by Guest Commentary

Thanks to the Daily Emerald for its in-depth look at OSPIRG ("The OSPIRG you can't see," ODE, Jan. 22). The article did a good job painting a broad brush stroke, including many of our accomplishments and the important blend of student activism with professional staff.

Regional primaries make more sense

Letter to the editor

A political primary is a preliminary election in which the registered voters of a political party nominate candidates for office. The key word here is preliminary. The current system allows small states such as Iowa and New Hampshire (assisted by the media) to award front-runner status to the victorious candidate.

Holy Cow decision raises questions

Letter to the editor

Give me a break. Five EMU employees and one University student decide that Holy Cow has to go? What five employees? Based on what information and data? We are throwing out a local business in favor of a Portland-based chain? Why do we need a Portland-based group when we have Eugene's one and only Holy Cow? How is it that five anonymous employees and one student have the say? A petition with nearly 400 signatures of campus folks who want Kathee and her restaurant to stay is overruled by five employees and a student? Are there some backroom shenanigans at work here? Smells like dead meat to me.

Replace chains, not local businesses

Letter to the editor

As an active vegetarian in the community I feel that getting rid of Holy Cow at the EMU is a bad way to show your support of vegetarians and of local business. Replacing it with the Laughing Planet, while a great idea, is not the way we should be doing things.

Show support for alternate lifestyles

Letter to the editor

I am a vegan student here at UO. I am sure you can understand the struggles I have at getting quick, healthy, good-tasting food between classes in or around campus. I recently moved here from Philadelphia. One of the reasons (no lie) I moved all the way across the country was how impressed I was at the University's commitment to all lifestyles (including vegan).
