Mapping the senses

Making maps accessible to the blind is the subject of research for a team of professors

Although maps help people get around, those who are blind or visually impaired have been left out of the mix. University researchers are trying to change that. They are creating maps for blind people, and the maps are designed to be read by fingertips. The maps feature raised symbols so blind people can feel their way around the map.

Like other University students, Kira Fonarow worried about deadlines, classes and time management. But for her, the few minutes she spent walking across campus between classes were the most stressful. Fonarow's sensitive lungs and vocal cords could not function efficiently when she inhaled cigarette smoke, and it took a toll on her daily life.

Events during Nontraditional Student Week will focus on a quickly growing student demographic

From Nov. 12 to 17, the Association for Non-Traditional Students in Higher Education encourages students and institutions to recognize nontraditional students and highlight efforts to improve the adult student environment. All this week, eleven different student groups and organizations will host a series of events aimed toward nontraditional students.
