The movement against immigration is doomed to fail

The movement against immigration is doomed to fail

by Josh Grenzsund

Tune in. Turn on. Keep them out. This is the catch phrase for the Unites States' nationalistic culture of xenophobia. Self-deluded, misanthropic and doomed to fail, this anti-immigration sentiment has much in common with former Harvard professor Timothy Leary's endorsement of a drug culture in the 1960s.

University money would be better spent on wheelchair access than the obelisk

Letter to the editor

The University of Oregon has such strange priorities. Those of us who work in Condon Hall have been asking for wheelchair access to our building (basically, an outside door that would open at the push of a button) for years, and are always told there's not enough money in the budget to do this.

Landlords and tenants should work together and be equally educated on their rights

Letter to the editor

I am writing in response to your June 8, 2007, article entitled "Rental Remedy" written by Whitney Malkin. During an interview prior to the publication of the article, Malkin and I had a lengthy discussion regarding the involvement of student organizations and the Rental Owners Association during the creation of the Eugene City Housing Code and the drafting of code language.

In order to defend America and morality, our only choice is to launch an attack on Iran

Letter to the editor

International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mohamed El Baradei said that an attack on Iran over its refusal to freeze its nuclear program would be "an act of madness . . . [that] would not resolve the issue." Quite to the contrary, an attack on Iran that destroyed its nuclear program and regime is long overdue.

Stem cell research is not unethical, it has potential to improve the lives of millions

Letter to the editor

Contrary to the claims of President Bush, there is nothing unethical about destroying embryos in the course of scientific research. An embryo is a potential, not an actual, human being, just as canvas is a potential, not an actual, work of art. It is a primitive cluster of cells, which is no more unethical to destroy than the cells that make up one's appendix.
