The Lane County Board of Commissioners may repeal the controversial county income tax if the federal government follows through with bills that would re-authorize federal payments to counties. The commissioners asked staff to prepare amendments that would repeal the income tax after it was announced that a renewal of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of 2000, worth $400 million, was included in an emergency supplemental appropriations bill.

As a part of the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Series, University of Arizona Distinguished Professor Chris Impey spoke Tuesday night in a lecture titled "Cosmic Evolution: From Big Bang to Biology." "I was told you should never have a setup guy who's more famous and funnier than you are, but I'm going to do it anyway," said Impey as he played a clip from "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" parodying the history of the theory of evolution.
