Got snow? Will travel

Thursday was not consistently sunny, but it was very much a spring day with a temperature of about 55 degrees and a light breeze. Still, Josh Dwinal went snowboarding on fresh snow from Mount Hood.

With an elevation of 11,249 feet, Mount Hood is snowy year-round. However, Eugene is not. Fifty-five tons of snow were trucked to the corner of Kincaid Street and East 14th Avenue from Oregon's highest mountain Thursday morning.

The Student Senate has just more than $3,000 left in its surplus account after allocating $19,995 to three student groups Wednesday. Senate has a $10,000 unallocated reserve it can also draw from.

Senate started the meeting with more than the $17,258 in surplus reported last week because of a discrepancy in paperwork, according to Senate Treasurer Billy Hatch.

Taxes may raise debt payments for arena

The state treasurer determined this week that all of the $200 million bonds approved by the state legislature for the University to build the basketball arena will be taxable - possibly adding up to $2 million per year to the debt payments.

The bonds' taxable status could raise the total annual debt payments for the athletic department to as much as $16.5 million, which the athletic department plans to pay back over 30 years using arena revenue. That number includes debt from the land purchase, which could be paid off quicker, however.

Mortgage crisis causes rise in demand for Eugene rental housing

For months, national headlines have screamed about the mortgage crisis and the downturn in housing markets. Eugene has for the most part been spared the brunt of this, but still, the national trend has local effects.

University economics professor Tim Duy said that when people can no longer get cheap mortgages, they would be pushed into or remain in the rental market.

Tim Breen, principal broker for Jennings & Co. Property Management, agrees.

The rental market "at least from a landlord's perspective, is a good one," Breen said.

The Internet has opened up possibilities for journalism that several years ago traditional, mainstream journalists never would have considered possible. Citizens are taking the helm and producing news about their communities that doesn't necessarily conform to what traditional media call news. The difference is that citizen journalism is produced by the "experts" in a community who care about that community.

Study: 8 glasses not for the masses

We know the old adage well: Drink eight glasses of water every day to stay healthy and hydrated.

Doctors have given their patients that line for decades, but as it turns out, there may be no reason to obey their orders.

After reviewing clinical studies, health experts at the University of Pennsylvania found no evidence that the eight-glasses rule makes an already healthy person any healthier.

Good news: More soon-to-be college students are applying to the University than ever before. Bad news: The University has no idea where to put them all.

According to the University housing department, 3,600 students can be lodged in student housing each year. Technically speaking, the housing department guarantees a room to anyone who applies before March 31. Those who apply later are placed on a waiting list, and given a room if one becomes available.

Students and community members in Eugene are trying to spark that down-home environment, square dancing for more than two hours on Saturday night. About 80 students participated in the dance, most getting into spirit with overalls and accents to boot. Portland has a vibrant bluegrass square dance culture while Eugene hasn't quite formed one. Student organizers hope that this can become a monthly event and want to form a square dance club here at UO.
