Poppy folk rocker Ben Kweller performs tonight at the WOW Hall with his band, The Trio on the Train Track. The mop-headed, boyish-looking Texan will give fans a chance to hear new material from his upcoming album, "Changing Horses," which is scheduled for release in early 2009.
Kweller, primarily a guitarist and soft-voiced vocalist, has toured with many leaders of the indie scene, including Ben Folds and Death Cab for Cutie. He has also appeared on "The Weird Al Show," and his music was featured in the movie "Wedding Crashers."
At age 19, Kweller moved to New York to launch his solo career. Later, as a one-man-band inspired by '60s rock legends, Kweller played all the instrumental parts on his self-titled album, released in 2006. Kweller often adds flavor to his simple, easy-going and upbeat melodies by featuring uncommon instruments like the glockenspiel, which is similar to a xylophone. His new album features the pedal steel, which is like an electric guitar on a horizontal stand.
Songs such as "Wasted and Ready," "This is War," and "Penny on a Train Track" tell stories of love, rebellion and hanging out. All of his music has an innocent and trouble-free appeal. Anyone looking for uncomplicated catchy tunes with a positive vibe should check it out.
