If Oregon's athletic department can put the package together, the Ducks may be making the longest road trip in college football history: to play in China.
As reported on Oregonlive.com Tuesday night, this would move the Ducks' season-opening game at Boise State in 2009 to a to-be-determined location in China. Talks are very preliminary, but if Oregon - who has permission from the NCAA to investigate the possibility - succeeds, it will become the first college football game played in China.
"Quite honestly, it's very Oregon," said Jeff Hawkins, director of football operations, to Oregonlive.com. "You like to be on the edge. You like to be first." Both Hawkins and Jim Warsaw, the namesake of the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center, contacted head football coach Mike Bellotti about scheduling a game in China. Both will travel to China with the University's vice provost for international affairs, Chungsheng Zhang, to further explore details of the game.
Boise State has not been contacted by the University about the possibility and attempts by Oregonlive.com to receive comment from Boise State's athletic director were met with no comment.
