Senior free safety Matthew Harper's two interceptions - including one with 11 seconds left in the ballgame - precipitated the Ducks' 24-17 victory over USC Saturday afternoon.

The No. 5 Oregon defense came up big every time it needed to in the Ducks' 24-17 victory over No. 9 USC Saturday, forcing three turnovers and stealing the spotlight from the much-heralded Duck offense and Trojan defense.

"I'm very proud of our team, especially our defense," said Oregon coach Mike Bellotti. "This was a defensive victory."

USC coach Pete Carroll was equally impressed with the Duck defense.

"Oregon did a great job defensively," said Carroll. "They were a lot better than I anticipated."

Oregon (7-1, 4-1 Pacific-10 Conference) gave up 378 yards to the Trojans (6-2, 3-2 Pac-10), but kept them off the board in several key situations. Oregon's two fumbles on special teams resulted in only three USC points despite great field position.

"We put the defense in a difficult spot twice in the first half and they held," said Bellotti.

Senior free safety Matt Harper had two interceptions on the day, including one with 11 seconds left and USC in Oregon territory, driving to try and tie the game. Harper's play ended the Trojan threat and the game.

Rover Patrick Chung paced the Duck defense with 13 tackles and cornerback Walter Thurmond III had 12, including three for a loss.

"Our defense doesn't get too much props, but I think we will after today," said Harper.
