On Wednesday, the Emerald printed an opinion piece regarding firearm laws in Oregon ("The Loaded Campus," ODE, 4/22/09). Truman Capps and his editors would be well advised to do just a modicum of fact checking before publishing ridiculous misinformation. It is probably true that Capps has "never heard of people arguing to allow concealed carry in bars." This is because, decades ago, when Oregon passed progressive concealed carry laws, drinking establishments were not placed on the list of prohibited places. In fact, college campuses are not on the list either (although it is against university system code). Also, the National Rifle Association's common argument is not "guns don't kill people; people kill people." Their argument is that criminals do not obey laws and passing more laws only further restricts the civil rights of the law-abiding. Laws do not prevent criminal acts. The continued call for further restrictions on civil liberties is despicable and typical of statist pukes.

More firearm laws only restrict civil liberties
