As a salaried employee, hours will vary, but a designer must be able to work an average of 20 hours per week, mostly in the afternoon or evening. The designer will design computer graphics and layout pages for the news, sports or entertainment section for publication in the newspaper, and will be specifically expected to:

  • Have an understanding of newspaper design and be able to design pages.
  • Become extremely familiar with the operation of computer design tools, including Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
  • Keep track of graphics, making sure they are finished in time for publication and contain no inaccuracies or errors of grammar, spelling or style
  • Produce graphic tags, pictures and infographics for the news desks
  • Type in information for graphics, as required
  • Search clip art files
  • Work with the design editor and other staff members to develop innovative graphic-oriented projects
  • Attend staff meetings and weekly desk meetings
  • Set individual goals each term to improve journalistic skills
  • Be creative and push innovative ideas
  • Complete other duties as assigned
