As a salaried employee, hours will vary, but an entertainment reporter must be able to work an average of 20 hours per week. An entertainment reporter will cover entertainment news and write features on assigned beat areas and will be responsible for a weekly entertainment section and will be specifically expected to:

  • Write a minimum of 40 inches of copy per week
  • Work with the entertainment editor and fellow reporters to generate story ideas
  • Ensure that all writing is accurate, fair, clear and complete
  • Work with the entertainment editor to improve writing
  • Become familiar with the rules of Associated Press and Emerald style
  • Ensure that all sources in the assigned beat areas are regularly (at least once a week) covered
  • Coordinate with the graphics department to ensure as many stories as possible have a visual element with them by posting photo and graphic tips
  • Finish all writing on deadline
  • Contribute to the ODE Calendar of Events
  • Issue blog posts, Twitter alerts and breaking stories online as necessary and as assigned. An entertainment reporter must blog at least once daily.
  • Keep regular office hours
  • Attend required staff meetings and weekly desk meetings
  • Monitor the news daily to keep abreast of issues that need to be covered and see that no pertinent news is missed
  • Set individual goals each term to improve journalistic skills
  • Contribute to supplements as needed
